Homer starts with an invocation, a prayer, towards the Muse. The Nine Muses were: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomeni, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Ourania and Calliope. There nine muses, the daughters of Zeus. They were known to motivate and be a role model to people and so they can create any form of art. Homer calls to the Muse praying "Sing in me, Muse and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy." Homer is basically telling the audience about the plot of The Odyssey through this prayer. He explains to us that the hero will lose his men do to their desperation. He authorizes that Odysseus will be captive of goddess Calypso. Homer discusses about how Calypso craves for Odysseus for her own, but Odysseus longs to go back home after ten years. Then he tells us about how all the gods pitied Lord Odysseus, except Poseidon. "All but Poseidon, raging cold and rough against the brave king till he came ashore" Poseidon makes it very hard for Odysseus to get home, but finally, Homer finishes the invocation giving the hint of "at last on his own land." Homer clues that Odysseus will make it back home at the end of this long journey/ adventure.
